'Unsquare Dance'

I put on a a jazz record…
Rolled out the soft cotton canvas
and mixed a colourscape of pigments
I kicked off my shoes
and danced across the canvas
a rainbow of playful you-got-this energy

Inspired by the jazz music of Dave Brubeck’s song of the same title, ‘Unsquare Dance’ is an ode to the out-of-the-box path that brought me to art. A true long way round. Looking through the kind amber hued spectacles of hind sight, it celebrates the unusual twists and even a misstep or eight as part of what makes a story worth telling. Each chapter leading into the next. Each unannounced adventure arriving through the vessel of playfulness. The work is to find that playfulness in every step. Inviting in the parts of life that don’t fit inside the box. Celebrating the not so serious, as path to the fullness of life.

I painted a stretch of canvas over six metres long and separated into six artworks, now stretching across the world. A tapestry that is now linked from Sydney to Brisbane to London to Norfolk to Sweden to Texas!
